Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)
What is ITS?
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) encompasses a broad range of wireless and wire line communications-based information and electronics technology. When integrated into the transportation system's infrastructure, this technology provides the tools to monitor the roadway conditions allowing Road Rangers and emergency personnel to respond more rapidly. This relieves congestion, improves safety and enhances the mobility of the roadway users.
Currently, the monitoring of SR 836 is performed at the MDX Transportation Management Center (TMC), collocated at the FDOT SunGuide center, which provides this monitoring service 24 hours a day; 7 days a week using a group of highly trained operators.
MDX ITS Projects
To Keep Miami-Dade County Moving, MDX has included a series of ITS projects on its Five-Year Work Program. These projects incorporate the installation of fiber optic backbone, traffic monitoring cameras and detectors.
MDX has completed the installation of ITS on SR 836, Dolphin Expressway, from I-95 to SW 137 Avenue.
It is anticipated that ITS will be installed on all MDX corridors by 2010. MDX has initiated plans to install ITS on SR 924/Gratigny Expressway, SR 874/Don Shula Expressway, SR 878/Snapper Creek Expressway and SR 112/Airport Expressway.
